01

Problem

The geography exam asks students to locate counties, rivers, relief units and European states on a map, then answer open questions graded against a detailed marking scheme. Most prep material is static PDFs: no feedback on the map and no way to know how an open answer would be marked. The product had to make the map interactive and give open answers a credible, rubric-based grade.

02

Scope and constraints

  • • Map exercises that work by touch on a phone and by click on the web
  • • Official past papers playable in the app, not only as downloads
  • • AI grading that follows the marking scheme and works from a photo of a handwritten page
  • • Real-time duels that stay fair on mobile connections

03

Implementation

Students learn and test directly on the map: counties and county seats, rivers, relief units, the states and capitals of Europe. Multiple-choice practice follows the exam format, and a daily test, streaks and a leaderboard keep the habit going.

Official papers from past sessions are playable in the app. Open answers, typed or photographed from a handwritten page, are graded by a language model against the official marking scheme, with points per requirement and an explanation of what was missing.

A real-time duel mode lets two students race through the same questions over WebSockets. The mobile app is Kotlin Multiplatform with Jetpack Compose and SwiftUI, the site is Next.js and the backend is Go on PostgreSQL, with one sign-in shared with the other BAC apps.

Geografie BAC launched in June 2026 on the web, Google Play and the App Store, and in July 2026 it was featured by iLikeIT on Știrile Pro TV. It is the clearest example of how CodingShadows applies language models: grading against an explicit rubric that the student can see. Store ratings are still few, so they are not quoted here.
